Chapter 1: What is a low voltage Power cable?
Low voltage is a voltage rating of 50 or fewer volts. A low voltage power cable is a cable used to supply the power of voltage ratings between 50V to 100V.
LV power cables are not subjected to high electrical stress. Low voltage power cables are used in electricity supply in low voltage installation systems.
These cables can supply both direct and alternating currents. For alternating current, it can supply a voltage rating between 50-100V and 75-1500V for direct current.
LV power cables are made of aluminum or copper conductors. It can be plain, tinned, or stranded.
The wire can have a circular, compacted, or shaped configuration. The cable is always flexible for easy installation.
We can also manufacture rigid LV power cable upon request. The insulation material used for the manufacture of the cable can be XLPE or PVC.
The demand for these cables has grown consistently over the years due to the increase in power use in residential areas, commercial and industrial places.
LV power cables are used in many applications including infrastructure, automation, lighting, fire alarm, etc. The cables are manufactured following various international standards.
As a specialist of low voltage power cable manufacturer, our standard low voltage cable portfolio contains cable with single and 3 core copper or aluminum conductors.
The Low voltage power cable contains steel amour or sometimes aluminum amour. We also supply LV standard power cables manufactured against specific power network requirements supplied in triplex formation.
SSG low voltage power cables are installed across several industries ranging from construction to power transmission. They are widely used for power distribution in low voltage applications.

Chapter 2: How do you identify color coding of low voltage power cable?
Our Low voltage power cables are manufactured in different varieties of colors. These colors enable the end-user to know where and what the cable is used for.
We have the following phases;
- Phase 1: Red color
- Phase 2: Yellow color
- Phase 3: Blue color
- Neutral: White color
- Ground: Green or green-yellow color
We also provide durable making on the surface of the cable or cable interval. We mark the cable using our company name SSG.
Other markings may include the type of insulating material used, conductor size, and voltage class.
Chapter 3: What are some of the trays for low voltage power cable?
We have different varieties of low voltage power cable trays. A cable tray is a unit which we use to support cables and raceways.
We have a heavy-duty cable tray, cable tray supports, and cable tray finish.
- Heavy-duty cable tray
We supply this type of cable tray in 2 mm thickness and a minimum height of 50mm. If you need a customized cable tray we also manufacture.
We use bolts on cable trays to secure each joint. We also supply cable tray tees, intersection units, bends, turns and sets used with cable trays.
If you are installing a heavy-duty cable tray and you don’t have accessories you can make them on site. We provide you with a guide on how to.
- Cable tray supports
We can supply you with cable tray supports or sometimes we make for you on-site. Our cable tray supports are made of ample strength to maintain rigid support to the fully landed cable tray.
We also ensure the deflection of any one section does not exceed 12 mm at mid-span. Where proprietary cable support racks are being used, then any channel used to support the cable trays should be of the same type.
See cable tray support;
- Cable tray finish
We ensure our cable trays and accessories are galvanized. This is because some cable trays are subject to the environmental condition of the installation.
We also ensure that our cable tray systems are compatible with the associated cable tray. You can also paint your cable tray with the appropriate paint or aerosol spray.
Chapter 4: How do you install a cable tray for low voltage power?
Installation of a cable tray is very easy. Ensure that you install the cable tray in full length without cutting.
If it’s necessary to cut, drill or tray then the damaged ends treat them zinc or galvanizing paint. Secure all the cables to the tray using purpose-made saddles together with nylon fastener and cable cleats.
After installing the cable ensure that the tray remains rigidly supported. The deflection of any one section of the tray should not exceed 16 mm at mid-span.
While installing the cable cleats make sure you leave a space of about 100cm between the fixation points. We use U steel galvanized channels to fix the cleats on the ceiling.
In case you want a vertical installation, the spacing between fixation points should be about 120 cm. Facing challenges in the installation of cable cleats? Call us!

Chapter 5: What are the different ways in which you can install an LV power cable?
Installation of low voltage power cables is very easy especially if you have the help of a certified engineer. During installation, the cables should be run between termination points in continuous lengths.
The low voltage power cable can be installed in different positions depending on its use.
- Installation below ground
The low voltage power cable can be buried directly underground. The cable can also be laid directly to the underground at a depth of 650mm.
After burying the cable in the ground cover it with sand around. Then add a layer of concrete over the sand and around the cable route.
Fill the remaining part of the trench with sand or concrete. After every 75 m of cable length, we recommend you insert a cable marker.
Ensure that the bending of cable does not occur during installation. This bending may cause some cracks hence reducing the lifespan of the cable.
For cables following the same route lay them in horizontal formation in the ground. Ensure there is the spacing between the cables.
We advise the use of adequate cable makers to mark the route of the buried cable. This is in case a change of direction occurs.
The cable is marked with a label indicating its cable size and circuit used.
- Burying the cable underground using PVC pipes.
You can still have another way of installing the low voltage power cable on the ground. This is done by installing the cables in PVC pipes as below.
The minimum depth in which you can install these pipes s 60cm. For the necessary installation and maintenance of the cables use heavy-duty covers.
For cable under road crossing, you can run then using PVC conduits encased in concrete. The minimum diameter required of a conduit is 150mm.
For cables underfloor or through a way you can either use conduits of either PVC or vitrified clay with clay plastic sleeve.
The work of the plastic sleeve is to form a push-fit joint with the glazed interior on PVC. The conduits should have bent to suit the cable.
Those cable conduits which terminate in buildings ensure you seal them with permanent plastic weatherproof sealing compound. You can also accompany hardwood bushes to prevent the ingress of water and foreign matters.
If there are any spare conduits and ducts, ensure also you seal them.
- Installation of Low voltage power cables above the ground.
Those applications are requiring the installation of a low voltage power cable above the ground. For this, make sure you install the cable from point to point without joints.
Unless specified otherwise, lay all cables in PVC pipes and cable trays. For cables running in the air, fix them using aluminum alloy or using galvanized bolts.
We also provide the bolts for fixing the cables once you make an order from us. Avoid excess pressure of cleats on PVC insulated cables to prevent the deformation of the plastic sheathing.
Make sure you use a cable tray for cables that cross open spaces. Also, paint the steel to prevent it from rusting.
Chapter 6: How do you identify a low voltage power cable?
A low voltage power cable should be built for electrical performance- we manufacture low voltage power cable with flexible high strand count copper conductors.
This is to ensure they can flex and bend without deteriorating the signal. This means that the cable is more thermally stable at connection points.
Also, this provides better corrosion and vibration resistance with a 4-8 time increase in conductor surface area.
So if you are going to buy low voltage power cable from an industry ask for a high-stand tinned copper circuit conductor. It should be insulated above and beyond minimum code requirements.
Low voltage optimized cables often significantly exceed the specified minimum wall thickness. The increased safety and performance by reducing the amount of electrical charge in the cable.
This, therefore, enables longer cable distance. It should have a low voltage power grade XLPE insulated with the proper RHHW-2 thickness
It should have ground and shielding protection from disruption. This means that it should have an excess of copper in the grounding terminal.
More copper ensures that all electrical noise within the cable is minimized. Cables with the equivalent of three full-size phase conductors in the ground system will be more effective in contacting noise.
When buying low voltage power cable ask for a 300 percent ground circuit conductor cable design for a smaller drive. You can also ask for a 100 percent cable design for larger drives.
It should have various Jacketing options. Low voltage power cables need to resist damage from physical deterioration while remaining flexible.
Cables with different options for industrial-grade jacketing offer performance. We give a bonus of being able to tailor a power cable to your specific application.
This all depends on the level of flexibility needed. If your cables face sunlight and oil exposure you need to buy PVC jackets.
If you need to protect your low voltage power cable from weld splatter that requires extreme flexibility you need to use TPE jackets.
We also offer halogen-free jackets with low smoke and zero-halogen upon request.
Chapter 7: What are the joints and terminations of LV power cable?
It is very important to have joint and terminations in your cable. Termination and joints for low voltage power cables provide satisfaction stress relief at the cable end.
They are manufactured to withstand air pollution and bad weather without any sign of a surface current track.
The cable splice should be electrically equal to ensure a completely reliable cable system. The conductors must be securely connected.
Also, the conductor shield must have a smooth surface to ensure good conductivity with the insulating material. The insulation must be free from void and contamination.
Where cables are terminated outside the building there is a need to use compound filled boxes. The joints of a low voltage power cable are made with compressed connectors.
The XLPE insulation of both cable ends is tapered down. The conductors are normally joined using crimp connectors.
For larger cable sizes the conductor is welded. The conductor’s joint is trimmed and it is smoothly covered by a semi-conductive sleeve bonding tape.
The screen wires are collected and jointed with a compression sleeve. All joints are made in molded plastic boxes and then wrapped with PVC tape.
This is done to give a degree of insulation at least equal to that of the original insulation. The cores of the low voltage power cables are made to have a joint color.
This is how the joints and terminations of an LV power cable looks like;
