What is an underground mining cable?

Before you use an underground mining cable you need to understand exactly what it is.
From the word underground, you can see it’s a cable designed to withstand long immersion or exposure to the underground environment.
This cable is designed for direct burial to the underground of a mine or tunnel. Our mining cable is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, inversion dust, and vibration.
Mining cable is used for high mechanical stress and can withstand simultaneous tensile and torsional stress. Our mining cables work best in mining grounds with frequent winding and unwinding conditions.
Our cable is designed to withstand both high and low temperatures. Our underground mining cable is not affected by any climatic conditions. Some mining ground might be harsh, rocky and very hard to extract a mineral.
The underground mining cable has a carrying capacity of additional currents higher than 50% in PVC and other rubber isolated cables.
Underground mine systems are somehow complicated than those for surface hence the cable must be carefully selected.
Because of the nature of the mine and the distribution of the underground requirements of voltage must be somehow radial.
The distribution of electricity to the mining industry is a distinctive area in both mining and electrical engineering. Some of the minerals which are mined using our cable include coal, gold, silver, diamond, etc.
All underground mining cables must be rugged, portable and specifically designed for installation in limited spaces. Underground mining cable is fed to the ground either through a shaft borehole or a fresh air entry.
The cable terminates in disconnect switches within 500 fits of the point of power entry and the mineral. The functions of the switches are to enable removal of underground power in case of emergency.
After manufacture of the underground mining cable, we do an inspection to ascertain the cable meets the following criteria;
- Adequate interrupting ability
- Reliability and simplicity
- Safety to personal and property use
- Resistance to chemical solvents
- It does not stick to other materials like silicone as defined by standards.
- The working temperature should be within a range of -60˚C and 180˚C
- It should have high resistance to humidity, radiation, ultraviolet rays, ozone, oxygen, corrosion, and pressure.
- It should have extremely high electrical resistance.
Welcome to SSG, and get yourself the best cable that can withstand any underground mining conditions.
What are the components of underground mining cable?
Conductors
The flexibility and strength of an underground mining cable are determined by the nature of the conductor used.
Conductors used in our underground mining cable are in conformance with the British international standards.
They usually employ tinned annealed copper wires stranded. The copper wires provide optimum flexibility. The flexibility is influenced by the number of individual wires for a given size, lay length of bunches and strands.
Also, the geometric arrangement of the stands influences the flexibility of the copper wires. We also have special designs that are designed to suit a particular application.
This special application includes cables for heavy-duty reeling or flexing. The use of specially designed conductors provides the underground mine cable with a good performance effect.
Core assembly length.
This is the vital factor that affects most underground mine cables’ lifespan when the cable is subjected to repeated reeling. A ration of cable lay length to pitch circle diameter is commonly used to specify lay lengths suited to various applications.
For moderate reeling cable this value should be less than 12.5 and trailing cable should be less than 17.
Insulation
Our cables are insulated using cross-linked polyethylene, ethylene-propylene, and terpolymer. This insulation makes our cable to be flexible and offer excellent thermal durability and electrical characteristics.
Insulation materials are chosen for optimum dielectric characteristics and resistance to deterioration. The material should highly resist oxidation, salts and copper compounds.
Inert filters are used for maximum electrical stability and low moisture absorption.
Pilot
The resistance between mining equipment and earth is usually high and dangerous voltage can be present. To prevent hazards from shock, ground fault currents are controlled by various systems.
To ensure the integrity of this safety circuit a small independent current may be passed through a pilot conductor. From the pilot conductor, it is passed to the load center and return through the earth conductor.
If this current is interrupted through a breakage, then the circuit breaker will automatically trip and remove power from the cable.
British mining regulatory authority requires the inclusion of an extensible central pilot conductor. This extensible pilot conductor is used for monitoring circuit integrity. This is specially designed and manufactured to restrict extensibility in service.
The cores for each underground mining cable must be electrically symmetrical for added safety.
Screens
The bending of conductors under tension accelerates the breakage of individual wires.
Partial failure of conductors can lead to wire ends that penetrate through the insulation. Metallic screens over the power cores are provided to ground such faults through the earth.
The screens are also used to relieve nonuniform electrical stress and provide a uniform capacitance to the ground. Screening is achieved by the combination of a helically applied layer of wire and a tinned copper wire braid.
Our cables are designed to have a fire propagation resistant semi conductive screens.
Sheath
The role of the cable sheath is to protect the underlying core assembly from mechanical or environmental damage. Some of the synthetic polymers used in sheaths at SSG include polychloroprene, chlorinated polyethylene, etc.
They are commonly filled with other materials to enhance sheath performance. A properly formulated sheathing compound is essential for high a high-performance reeling cable. The higher the tensile strength the stronger the material when stretched.
As the material gets hotter tensile strength reduces with a consequent reduction in tear and resistance. As cables age they become brittle and elongation may be reduced.
At SSG, we always work towards quality cables that are safe to handle by human beings.
We understand the risks involved in mining and the tremendous importance of underground mining cable. Every product you find in our inventory complies with the international standards of cable manufacture.
The cables have been tested for durability and have been found to perform well under the extreme conditions of underground and open-cut mines. Rest assured we have been powering mining equipment all over the world for decades and know what it takes.

The cable has been used by customers and industries in excavating minerals like gold, silver, copper, iron, and nickel among others. For any project about excavating ores from the ground, you can conduct us to select the best cable for you.
Chapter 5: How do you select cable for underground mining?
The following are some of the considerations you should make when selecting cable for underground mining;
- The conductor size- the conductor size of an underground mining cable must be sufficient to keep losses sufficiently low. The diameter of the conductor affects the strength of the electric field. This means a solid conductor will have less dielectric stress than a stranded conductor. If you increase the number of strands it will reduce losses if the current is of high frequency.
- The insulation material- the insulation around the conductor might be slightly conductive. This is done to reduce electric stress by creating a larger diameter of the conducting surface. There are many insulating types available with us and their selection depends on factors such as flexibility, frequency, price, and AC or DC voltage. At higher voltages there here might be a combination of layers of the insulation to manage the stress.
- Shielding- underground mining cables creates a field around the conductor that is influenced by the cable insulation and everything that is in proximity to it. If shielding is used then the field is contained between the \ conductor and the shield. You can calculate this using the dielectric constant and the thickness of the cable insulation.
- Also, use insulation with a low dielectric constant. Also, an underground mining cable should have a metallic screening to prevent radiated electromagnet field.
Chapter 6: What is SHD Cable in underground mining?
We have designed a power cable for heavy-duty mining equipment. It is a type of high voltage distribution cable in underground mines. This is one of the products which is sold alongside the main underground mining cable.

Chapter 7: How do you test an underground mining cable?
We perform the following tests to ensure that what we have manufactured is exactly an underground mining cable;
- On-site risk assessment- any risk associated with underground mining is conducted at the place of installation. Underground mining cannot just be done by any cable.
- Preliminary steps and safety management- in this you are advised to use correct methods to positively identify the cable to be tested. Also, ensure the associated gear operationally
- Check and record cable identification
- You need to verify the sheath integrity
- Perform a core insulation test to determine the insulation resistance of the under round mining cable.
